Fangirl, by Rainbow Rowell is a wonderful YA novel about a girl named Cath. Cath is a freshman at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She is a book nerd, like me, who loves to write fan fiction.
This book walks us through some of the challenging things people face in new situations. It deals with mental health, family issues, trust, and many other important topics. I thought that was super funny and relatable. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
Writing
I love Rowell's writing style! I thought the way she added little sections of Cath's fanfiction into the story was intriguing. It made the story much more engaging because it was almost like you were reading two stories at once. Rowell managed to make Cath's writing style just a little different from her own, so when you were reading her fanfiction it really felt like a different person was writing it.
Characters
The characters in this story were perfectly constructed. They were funny, relatable, and unique. Each character made their own mistakes throughout the story. The relationship between Wren and Cath showcased a lot of common issues, as well as various happy moments between family members that have always done everything together, like Wren and Cath. I though these characters were delightful and they made me laugh, cry, and burst with excitement.
Plot
The plot was alright. It had some good moments but it almost felt like nothing ever happened. The characters, the writing, and the engagement were what held this book together. If the characters weren't as strong and the content wasn't as relatable I don't think I would have enjoyed this book. The majority of the book was spent developing the characters. For a while, I just didn't understand where the book was going. It wasn't until the end that I understood the plot but, without the characters, I doubt I would have made it that far.
Intensity
There is not much intensity throughout this novel. Most of it is light-hearted and sweet. There are a couple of moments that are a little bit intense. There are some scenes in hospitals that are very emotional but they really add to the story. This is a pretty easy read. Don't expect much intensity.
Engagement
I felt the engagement was great! I read late into the night and couldn't stop. I'm not completely sure why though, it certainly wasn't the most gripping storyline. Something kept me reading. Maybe it was the passion Cath had for writing or how relatable the content was, or maybe, how the book consistently made me smile. I am not sure but there was something special about the book that kept me going.
Overall
Overall found this book to be a pleasant read. It is a perfect book to read at the beach or enjoying a day at the park. It is super easy to read and quick as well. It does seem a little pointless at times, but in the end it has an important message.
